Happy New Comic Book Day Eve (Happy NCBDE?) to you all!
I'm coming at you this week from my couch, which is the ugly thing pictured under my stack of comics. There are only two NCBDs until I will be over in Seattle for Emerald City Comic Con. This is my third year going and I am super excited. My boyfriend and I got so much stuff signed this year and I'm looking forward to having a slightly more calm and relaxing weekend this year. I'm focusing more on getting original art and less on lugging around bags of hard covers. Mostly, we just got so much signed that there isn't nearly as much this year for the guests who are coming. I have never cosplayed at a con before, although I have always wanted to. Usually, I'm just trying to get so much done that I worry I won't have time to get my exclusives and what not if people are stopping me for pictures. We'll see how things go this year, though and maybe next year I'll break down and finally make a classic Silk Spectre cosplay.
Alrighty, time to read some floppies.
Sex Criminals #5
If you're reading this, please take thee extra few minutes to read both the "previously ons." These are such a riot and are almost as good as the comic itself. It's been a while since we've had an issue and apparently the next one won't be out until June. JUNE!! This issue is phenomenal, just like the series as a whole. The humor is spot on, lending itself to a lot of laugh out loud moments (I refuse to use text speak, especially "lol." I hate "lol.") and it continues to be one of my favorite comics each time it comes out. I'm really excited because in just a week and a half, I get to meet both Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky at ECCC. I am really looking forward to getting my #1 and my #1 2nd Printing of the 4th Printing.
Lazarus #7
Greg Rucka is also going to ECCC! I would love to have him sign and get my number #1 CGCed. I never CGC things to then turn around and sell online, I just like to have particular comics that I love and are in good condition get CGCed for my personal collection. This comic definitely is one I love enough for that. This is another issue that shows Forever as a child during training. Reading these scenes is so heartbreaking for me because she's just a little girl but all of the things that make her special are beaten out of her so she can be this weapon for her family. This issue also picks up with the waste who are traveling to work. It's interesting to see the complete differences among the classes and how even Forever isn't yet really aware of how poorly the waste are treating or that they're really people. I'm really hoping that something will change that.
Batman and (Aquaman) #29
This issue begins the Hunt for Robin story arc. which I am incredibly excited about. Ra's al Ghul has stolen the bodies of Talia and Damian and now Bruce is trying to hunt them down. This arc will continue with the Batman and (different character each month) format I believe, hopefully with the end result being finding Damian's body and finding a way to restore him. I miss Damian...
Ms. Marvel #2
This second issue was everything I hoped for. Kamala is trying to figure out exactly what happened to her in the mist and come to terms with her recently and strangely acquired powers. I am really happy with the pacing of this story and how it is progressing. Everything about this comic is done well, I have to see and I am really looking forward to seeing it continue to evolve.
Sovereign #1
This is a new Image title that I added after seeing in Previews. It was described as "an epic fantasy in the tradition of Game of Thrones." I figured that was enough for me to try out at least the first one. It's written by Chris Roberson and the artist is Paul Maybury. This first issue did have the feel of an episode of Game of Thrones in the sense that the book had several small scenes each focusing on a group of characters in this world. The first issue did a lot of exposition, introducing the groups of characters. This is both good and bad. It's good because you get to meet multiple groups of characters and get a larger view of this world. However, you do only get a few pages with each group so the first issue doesn't really give you much of a feel for any of the characters. We'll see how things progress in the later issues.
Letter 44 #5
This issue gives us the first real glimpse into the alien landscape the crew has discovered. This issue is pretty action packed both in space and on Earth. This I think is the first issue that you don't see inside of the ship, but that doesn't mean you don't see any of the crew. This is continuing to be a great read and I really appreciate the fact that it always seems to come out on time. I used to take that for granted, but reading more and more independent comics you start to realize that monthly is often just an ish.
A Voice in the Dark #5
This issue is part 3 of the "Killing Game' story arc. This issue was probably my favorite so far as things are really starting to gear up. It was actually actually a bit stressful to read at points as the tension grew. I highly recommend this comic again and encourage you to check it out, especially if you're a fan of the show Dexter.
Harley Quinn #4
This is such a delightful comic to read. Also, there's this amazing Star Wars reference that just killed me. Let me know if you spot it. Harley Quinn is just so ridiculous and over the top but in all the right places.
Clockwork Angels #1
This is comic is based on the story and lyrics of Neil Peart, from Rush. To be honest, while I enjoy Rush I know very little of their musical catalog so I am unfamiliar with this album. That said, I really enjoyed this. I found the story to be engaging and it is a very interesting world that was created. I will definitely come back for #2.
Ten Grand #8
This comic I was having a tough time with. I was debating whether to stop getting the single issues. but this issue was so awesome that I completely changed my mind. This issue has a few pages that were done by Ben Templesmith, although I don't think they were colored by him. A lot of what has been building up is coming together and things might get a little crazy soon.
Daredevil #1
I have read very little Daredevil in my days. It was always something I wanted to rectify, but there are only so many hours in a day and I have a million things I always want to read. I am happy I picked up this number one, though. It gives you a pretty good feel for some of the characters and has a compelling first issue.
Rocket Girl #4
It's been a little while since we've seen an issue of this one. People from the future have come back to stop them from stopping what they were going to originally do which would cause the future that they wanted to go back and stop in the first place. Yep. Good stuff, loving the art.
Woo, I'm done an hour early. I'm so proud of myself :P
Question of the week:
1) Have you ever been to a comic convention?
2) If so, what do you look forward to the most about them? (vague sounding question, I'm sorry. When you think of Comic Con, what are the first things you think of that you want to do/experience?)
Questions, comics, sleepy stuff. Bye!
