I tried the halfling thing when I was a rogue, but now that I'm playing a human I'm kind of kicking myself in the ass because humans get extra skill points, and rogues pretty much depend on their skills. Bah!
However, I could see how being a halfling magic-user could be useful, since your small size adds to your AC, thus partially alleviating the problem of not being allowed to wear armor.
