Yesterday began at midnight with a night bus from Cherating to Kota Bharu, Malaysia. From there I caught a local bus to the border at dawn and crossed over to the Thai city of Sungai Kolok. Then I boarded a train for a 12-hour journey to Nakhon Si Thammarat, which is where I am now.
It's a lovely, untouristy city, and I'll post more photos soon. The view is from my ninth-floor hotel room:

Tomorrow my plan is to go north to Surat Thani (also by train – the best way to travel in Thailand), where I'll stay a few nights, and then from there go to Railay (near Krabi) for a week of blissful paradise.
