Late Sunday/Early Monday update... Work was. As it is sometimes. More than anything, I'm happy not to be there as I have the next few days off, sort of. There's a brief management meeting I have to attend on Tuesday. The two+ hours I end up spending there can be later subtracted from the time I'm obligated to spend at work on Thursday. Yes, that's special but what does that mean..? It means that I can sleep as late as 1pm, show up to work long enough to drink a cup of coffee, have a small middle-management meeting and pack it up and go home.
The only major work gripe I have is who my group home has hired as its second teacher, me being the first. It's this cat who's in his fifties, has shifted jobs w/o explaination every 5-10 years and seems to come across as un-engaged. He applied for the position about four weeks ago and has worked since then trying to gain a feel for the work as his other experience was as a special ed. teacher in Bridgeport. What's the difference? His backround is a structured institution, ours isn't in vibe and certainly in belief. I've attempted to put my 8-9 years of management training experience to work by showing him the ropes, talking about our responsbilities to the agency & the residents themselves and how we can best use our past experience to draw from to give better depth in insight. All of the examples I use to illustrate this are met with a, "Yeah, yeah...I've done that before.", or the ever popular, "Yeah, my old job did that but I found it to be a waste of time." I should have apologized for having put him out.
I brought this up to the group home manager who actually sees eye to eye on most things... My overall position on hiring has been, "Things here are actually quite stable. Since we aren't stuck without proper staffing, we can dictate the who's, how's and when's of the next teacher. We shouldn't hire someone just for the sake of hiring someone." The manager has agreed with me that this cat seems to gloss over a great deal, not putting any great effort or interest in, not only how things are run for our Austistic population but, why it's necessary in the first place.
A good example of this is the first small management meeting the three of us had... We were talking about the decrease of our normally overwhelming outdoor activities. I said that we've had a number of familiar standby's but, something new as an indoor recreation would be great. He launched into a scheme whereby he'd be able to get the residents part-time jobs throughout the county being someone's lackey (for lack of a better word). I stated that everyone under the roof already had jobs...one of them actually clocks in more hours full-time then do some of the employees that supervise him. They needed exercise, not another job. He countered by saying the gigs would be strenuous enough to be great exercise. I turned to my superior, looked at him and allowed him to be the one to pace...his...words...slowly...planely...stating...that...there...would...be ...no...new...jobs. He broke, looked confused and changed the subject.
As with most subjects, I find it really unfathomable when someone just doesn't get it... I've been a stumpted motherfucker before but, one can see the effort (in the form of ear-smoke) being out into whatever it is. This fellow's synapses lacked conductivity...they weren't firing whatsoever.
Anyhoo, that's my rant it seems and I'm sticking to it... Thanks for listening or at least politely pretending to do so. I actually enjoy my job profoundly and the people I work with, as well. I'm well aware of how often those two occur naturally and thus, my difficulties there are usually situational rather than systemic.
I'll be flitting around the county over the next couple of days. I'm most likely being reunited with one of my best frineds from high school later on today, technically. When not catching up with him, I hope to do so with you fine folk. Finally, I'll leave you to stop and welcome back the ever-wonderful arachne!!! In the short time you were gone, fuck if you weren't missed...lots!
