"What is a saint? A saint is someone who has achieved a remote human possibility. It is impossible to say what that possibility is. I think it has something to do with the energy of love. Contact with this energy results in the exercise of a kind of balance in the chaos of existence. A saint does not dissolve the chaos; if he did the world would have changed long ago. I do not think that a saint dissolves the chaos even for himself, for there is something arrogant and warlike in the notion of a man setting the universe in order. It is a kind of balance that is his glory. He rides the drifts like an escaped ski. His course is the caress of the hill. His track is a drawing of the snow in a moment of its particular arrangement with wind and rock. Something in him so loves the world that he gives himself to the laws of gravity and chance. Far from flying with the angels, he traces with the fidelity of a seismograph needle the state of the solid bloody landscape. His house is dangerous and finite, but he is at home in the world. He can love the shape of human beings, the fine and twisted shapes of the heart. It is good to have among us such men, such balancing monsters of love."
- L. Cohen, Beautiful Losers (1966)
I had a real hankerin' to read some Leonard Cohen this morning but alas, it's still packed away in a box. I did however remember this quote. Perhaps that'll tide me over until I can hit up my library this afternoon.
I had an awesome time at Flux! As much as I would normally consider it difficult to make it there regularly, I've new reason to do so... The 'new regulars' were in full attendance. King_Of_Skulls and KareBear beat Allied to being first to arrive. Laerkai brought his remarkably nice girlfriend out. Her not running away from from us hardened SGCT'ers I took as an auspicious sign. One of my best friends in the world, AmazonRed13 came out to revel in booze and a long list of remarkable good news. LittleSister took to hanging out in the smokers lounge (dark back hallway) w/ ELMCITYDRUNK. jawyoga arrived, dressed to the nine's and beaming. My wallet says, "Don't go next week!" but my much louder sense of fun reminds me how much music I really know and like they've been spinning of late.
I'm going to work on posting new pictures up in SGCT. I'm hoping that Laerkai does the same! The underwater photos from Lake Compounce should be ready to pick by lunchtime, maybe. The very second I return home, those will be posted, as well.
