What you wrote sums up how problematic it is to believe free will is merely an illusion. Predestination makes us all cosmic clowns. I don't know if Harris just wanted to rock the boat, stir the pot, whatever, just to get everybody riled up so that he could sell more books.

Today is the end, the very final day of the world....Or at least that' is what the Mayans believed. I am still unconvinced but I suppose the possibility is always there. We shall see what happens tonight. My money is on the fact that I will still have to wake up in the morning and go to work.
