Holy crap, that was both scary and exhiliarating. I've never driven before, so I thought he'd find me a parking lot and let me play there. That's not what happened. The guy had me out in 4 lane traffic doing left turns. He told me he likes his students to get over their fear from the start. He sorta just throws you into it.
I still have to learn to be "friendly" with the steering wheel (read: white knuckles of doom), but I drove all over the city in fairly heavy traffic. I'm sorta sweaty and filled with adrenaline now.
The teacher is super nice. I think he might be from Ethiopia or Eritrea. He told me to drive as if everyone else on the road was "drunk or crazy."
Ok off to work, with lovely patches of sweat under my arms.

I think the worrying thing (and where I part company from his wording, because it's not quite as simple as "not paying attention") is the way that people do not think about their vehicles and how they use them.
I suppose it's too much to expect people to think...
