I just celebrated my birthday three days late because of my finals. It's funny that if I was living in the US right now I would have got extremely drunk that night, but in Canada it's not even a big deal b/c you can drink at 19. I love this country
After living in canada for about a year I have finally started to understand the institutions here. I love how parliment degenerates into a shouting match on a reguar basis. to an american who is used to the dullness of c-span, the coverage of parliment is a hilarious spectacle.
I think the problem with Canadian politics is that the politicians are not focused on their own country enough. The conservative leader seems like he wants to follow president bush in his policies. Martin is a good job in rejecting missle defense, but I still get the sense that he is holding back on legislation because it would upset the US.
The gay marriage issue was a good start for this liberal government. It's good that they are taking a stand on a controversial issue. However, I think that a serious reevaluation of htis country's drug policy is in order. The western provinces have taken the lead in this area because of the heroin epidemic in vancouver. While walking around east hastings I've seen this problems first hand and it was as bad as anything I've seen in Houston, the third largest city in the US. That's why the injection clinic and the general attitude in this part of the world gives me hope.
People here are open to different solutions than you would see in other places. If the social experiments here work in North America it will hopefully be a wakeup call to other canadian and american cities that they can deal with there crime and drug problems without involving the criminal justice system. By giving drug addicts a chance to contribute to society without making them feel like trash I think we may be able to help an entire generation without criminalizing them like my generation.
Thanks for reading my drunken rant, I will be playing a show in the next couple weeks in Victoria, BC at Steamers pub. I'll post an event when I know the date.
