I have cut soda out of my diet(which, considering I drank 8 to 12 a day, is kind of huge for me) but I'm having a problem staying away from fattening foods.
DUDE! that is AWESOME! i am really impressed! you have done a great thing for yourself.
my suggestion for staying away from the fatty foods sounds like i stole it from a women's magazine (which i probably subconciously did) but it works for me: fill up on healthy foods! ta-da!
i always have one piece of fresh fruit (apple, banana, or blueberries), one granola bar, and one yogurt at work to turn to in the event that i get hungry. grilled meat is not all that bad. the merc has those tasty salmon fillets in the back, at their deli. anything fried or creamy is what will really get you. including ranch dressing. always use fat free dressing, or as close as you can get to it, because 2 tablespoons of regular salad dressing have half your daily recommended allowance of fat. ewwww! i also recommend popping your own popcorn in olive oil and then just sprinkling salt on it. the olive oil makes it taste good, and you end up not needing the butter.
you can do it! the trick is to keep eating, just eat healthy.
As a warning, what I am about to write is not going to be funny, it's not going to be glib, it's not even going to be political for once. It's going to be sincere, it's going to be honest, and it's going to be quite possibly depressing. I hope that some of it is uplifting though also. I can't promise anything...

Btw I love Seabiscuit. One of my fav movies and books. You can't beat yourself up for the things that you have no control over. Your mom knew that you loved her. She always knew that. Parents always know. Because they love you and no matter what you say or don't say you are godlike in their eyes.

1) your grandmother sounds like a badass human being. old ladies cussing make me giddy.
2) at least they love you. and just think, time spent with the young ones is encouraging thoughts outside of the box. on some level.
3) have you read this? cklarock 5.11.05 it is what it is.
4) six hour drives BITE! arrrgh. i feel for you. how often do you go back? travel time for me to get back to my family is approximately the same, although 3.5 hours are spent in a plane, and the remainer is in a car.
5) this morning when i saw your post in cklarock's journal, i cursed you. because i imagined that if you are supposed to be at work at 8 like i am, you were going to be on time, and i was not. you win!
Have you considered just not going? You could tell them the drive is just too long, you're too busy at work, or that you have to drive the getaway car while your new black boyfriend sticks up a liquor store?

i so FEEL you on the thing about louise's. the schooners are so cheap and delicious but the crowd is so intimidating. which is just hysterical because i never associate lawrence with anything intimidating, but it's true! so many cool kids go to thursday nights at louise's. i've tried it twice and my social anxiety actually walked me right out the door after five minutes one of those times. the other time i went really early and somehow avoided the crowd.
i would offer to accompany you, but tonight's my knitting night. right down the street from where you'll be, i'll be at aimee's coffee shop. i'd invite you, but it's an all girls thing. sometimes there's three of us and sometimes there's eight, but generally we turn into cackling hens. it's my one girl-night a week.
i hope you have an excellent time. you're awesome, don't forget it.

Fast Food Nation is perfectly described by the phrase "fabulously disturbing."
i need to read What's The Matter With Kansas, but i'm having a hard time starting it, because i just barely got to this state, and i'm in the process of falling in love with it. maybe i'll wait until winter. heh.
