yeah, he was prolly one of the first 18Xrays (as we call em) back in the day. 30 years of this wiould definitely make you a grumpy old man. and yes, one or two degrees of sep. and no, i haven't really sought out military shit on here. when an SF guy wants to hang out, it ain't with other army guys. unless it's other SF dudes.

I think that Shindig Dancer is trying to figure out why he keeps thinking of Jackie Wilson when he tries to think of his girlfriend.

My favorite entry in the Sweaty Soul Legend Juke Joint Hall of Fame: Sam Cooke at the Harlem Square Club in Miami. You get to hear a smooth TV-friendly pop phenomenon turn into a rasping, cackling satyr as he tears up his hits in a damp little club--it's enough to send a Hullabaloo Singer running for cover.

In my last entry, I picked the Final Four, but got the scores wrong. Who would have thought that NC would roll over for us? I guess after watching Roy's teams for 15 years I should have known. I also thought that Sherron Collins and Russel Robinson would do for the whole game what they did for *most* of the game on Memphis' Rose and...

That seemed like a hell of a game last night, unfortunately I was only able to catch the last 45 seconds of OT since I was at work for 16 hours. On my way home Kiki did call to tell me about Chalmers nailing the 3 to send it to OT. She was going crazy last night, I haven't seen her this excited about sports since she found out they serve nachos at hockey games.

Any unnecessary rioting in the streets? I never understood that. When Maryland won the championship back in '02 the students shutdown a main road going through the school and just destroyed everything in sight. Overturned cars, broke store windows and even set sofas on fire in the middle of the street.

"Steppa right up, folks . . . get yer FREE BALOONS here! FREE BALOOOOONS! Sorry, folks no exit! Enjoy the Promenade of Baloons! Wait for it, folks . . . waaaaait for it . . ."

Antonio Mancini

I think I might have a new favorite painter, and I don't say that lightly.

I stumbled across this slide-show of some of Mancini's works, and . . . I think I'm in love.

This guy paints like I wish I could, seriously. I'm particularly enamored with his older stuff before he went (more) insane. I certainly need to see some of...

"After the Duel" seems like it would be the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" statement of its time against the stupidity of dueling. I really wonder what the story behind the painting is; what got into his mind to do that work? So effective- the horror of the innocent left behind, the emptiness of the shirt, using the owner's absence as a more powerful tool than if he had painted him.

Writing a book, under contract, no less!
durbustweeb:
Damn you. No invite? And we being next to brothers?

The book is listed on Amazon, most likely very close to the top ten non-fiction, I'm sure. It's titled "Beyond Digital Photography: (I can't remember the subtitle part)" I'm so impressed with myself I'm trying to learn how to poop gold.

Glad we've become so civilized that we simply sue each other to suck the life out of those we wish to destroy.

Glad you're here. Otherwise no one would write in my journal. I should probably just start every one of them "Dear cklarock..."

Happy new year! For your new year's resolution, maybe you should cut out the freaky 70's pastel pantsuit dancers. They'll melt your brain!
dr_u:
That's almost as good as the video I saw of George Burns crimp walking.

Congratu-damn-lations!!!! I am so incredibly excited and happy for you both. Even though I haven't gotten a chance to actually meet you two yet, you've always seemed perfect together, and am doing the happy dance for your marriage!

**happy dance**

Vegas, huh? You'll have to let me know what things you did and/or recommend doing there since we're hitting it over Thanksgiving.

Congrats again!

Oh, the choices. Hmmm, as much as I'm tempted by the revenge option, perhaps I should just stick with the dark secret, to be revealed later on and shake the beliefs of my enemies at just the right time.

I'll check with Karen on the hunch-back, but I think we'll have to pad her for that role. Now, if I could just get the bats to do my bidding and stop their bitching! smile

Knock 'em dead this weekend, and remember: each vodka shot on your wedding day = one more year of wedded bliss.

I . . . I . . . I have to share.

Really, I'm not sure how even to contextualize this video except to say that Dragonforce (the band) is a half-mocking, three-quarters serious* throwback to Epic Speed Metal of the late 80's, and that the fan-created video below proves that they should make all of their videos out of Final Fantasy game cutscenes.

It's...

I had a great weekend. Played games with 40 other high-functioning nerds and got to be the giant talking cockroach, the 30s gangster with tommy guns for hands and the Engliish WWI deserter dillatante. Good times!

And in some Real Life (TM) excitement, Sophie got hit on by the Panamanian Men's Soccer Team. "Muy linda! Muy linda!"

Apparently we were sharing the same Boston hotel....

Did you get a chance to see our under 20 boys beat Brazil? I was stunned, not just by the victory, but the stellar play for our side. Freddy Adu was the best player on the field hands down.
lancelac:
Good article, thanks for the link. I totally agree that the English (and even more so American) coaching philosophy just doesn't cut it in football, like it might in some pure aggression sports like American football and Ice Hockey. Creativity and spontaneity is just too important to weed it out in favor of pure speed, strength and discipline.

Can't wait for Wednesday's game vs. Uruguay!
