Ahhh, Thursday. It's 8PM and I've already worked at my shitty ass job for 8 hours, had a nice $1.75 schooner at Louise's(and yes, I will continued to pimp out Louise's until I make it so it's always packed and my social anxiety makes me run out before I even walk in), and cleaned out my car. The latter is a necessity because I'm going to my Grandmother's for the holiday weekend. A trip to my Grandmother's is a nerve wracking experience for me for multiple reasons. Here they are in handy list format.
1) My grandmother is the uber-conservative. She is one of the people who used to yell at the screen everytime President Clinton came on the screen with things like "Liar!" or "Chickenshit!" which is the most my grandmother will ever curse. This, of course, could lead to a clash because I am taking my book, What's the Matter with Kansas?, which is a question that she and her brethren would answer with a resounding 'nothing".
2) I have many family members vying for time with me, when all I really want to do is sit around, watch tv, go to the lake, and read the aforementioned book. So, instead of that relaxing evening, I will hang out with my 2 cousins Michelle(which if that doesn't seem confusing enough, I also have a sister-in-law Michelle), go to a movie with my 2nd cousins Devyn and Paige, and spend a great deal of time defending my life choices to my grandmother, her sister, and her brother.
3) Western Kansas is absolutely gorgeous. I'm not kidding, it's one of the most beautiful places on earth, if you ask me, but it's also unbelievably racist. I literally had to sit through this exchange on my last trip home(if you're easily offended I recommend you skip to the next point of the list).
My Cousin: (off the football game) Wow, that's one big nigger!
My Uncle: Must have ate a lot of watermelon and chicken to get like that.
And people wonder why I drink heavily when I'm around these people.
4) I have to drive 6 hours to get there. This is on top of my normal 8 hour workday tomorrow. Just the thought of it makes me cranky, and a cranky Tanner is a...well, a normal Tanner in all honesty, but still.
Eh, I've ranted long enough, but I have to give a quick "shout-out"(I'm so hip! if this was 1996) to Sophie for making me feel at home upon my return to SG. And regarding your post a few days ago about what it is that brings people to this site, I'll admit, I was brought at first by the pics, but I've stayed and returned for the camradarie that you form with the people that you meet through here. So, to everybody who I've met on here and talked to either through comments or some other way, you guys rock! And stop snickering, Bright, I am capable of being genuine at times!
PS New pic with my new much shorter hair. Go me!

1) your grandmother sounds like a badass human being. old ladies cussing make me giddy.
2) at least they love you. and just think, time spent with the young ones is encouraging thoughts outside of the box. on some level.
3) have you read this? cklarock 5.11.05 it is what it is.
4) six hour drives BITE! arrrgh. i feel for you. how often do you go back? travel time for me to get back to my family is approximately the same, although 3.5 hours are spent in a plane, and the remainer is in a car.
5) this morning when i saw your post in cklarock's journal, i cursed you. because i imagined that if you are supposed to be at work at 8 like i am, you were going to be on time, and i was not. you win!
Have you considered just not going? You could tell them the drive is just too long, you're too busy at work, or that you have to drive the getaway car while your new black boyfriend sticks up a liquor store?
