Are we this stupid?
Ok, so in the Uk, they stopped a terrorist attack on a bunch of planes. Lots of lives saved. Great news.
So now, in America, we're not allowed to take liquids, cel phones, laptops, ipods, or lotions onto airplanes, because they're afraid that any of these could be explosive devices. Does this make ANY sense? They managed to stop a terrorist attack in the UK by simply doing their jobs. The security personnel at the airport operated within their rights as security personnel, detected something supspicious and caught it. The police, through good old fashioned detective work, rounded up the suspects in a fairly short amount of time. None of this required the raping of civil liberties to accomplish.
So then, why is it that in America, the so-called land of the free, we have these restrictions placed on us? As if these are the only ways to get a bomb onto a plane. Besides that, whatever happened to the x-ray machines? The metal detectors? Explosive detectors? Doesn't all of the technology at our disposal allow for us to detect explosive triggers? Certainly it can't be THAT similar to a regular cel phone that they're no longer allowed.
Do we really not trust the security personnel in place? Are they so incompetent that they couldn't do exactly what they did in the UK and maybe FIND THE BOMBS BY DOING THEIR FUCKING JOBS????? Are american security officers so lazy and inept that we need to issue such blanket rulings like "no more drinks on planes?" Does the American government really think so lowly of its own people? And if so, why aren't there stricter guidlines in place for hiring security?
I'm glad that so many lives were saved, but i'm really about fed up with the reactionary, paranoia induced, and fear-governed tactics of our administration. The Patriot act is about the dumbest thing they could have done. It's the same as cencorship in my opinion. I mean, why don't parents raise their children? Why do we rely on the government to raise our kids? They can't even keep track of their own officials. How are they going to raise YOUR children?? Likewise, why we trust the don't the police, detectives, investigators and other security personnel to actualy DO THEIR JOBS? Why does the government feel the need to step in like this and inch ever so much closer to martial law?
I'll tell you something. If i were a terrorist and i was watching all of this from that perspective, and if this was all my plot and it had been thwarted, i wouldn't even care, because the FEAR that has enveloped this nation was the original goal anyway, and that has been achieved. We aren't winning the war on terror if we're still scared, now are we? I mean seriously, how long will it be before we're all stripped naked, given anesthetics and are placed in tubes for the duration of the flight?
Face it: the terrorists are winning. They're not trying to take over the world thru such direct means as actual war. They're using subversive underhanded techniques like scaring nations into states of inactivity. THe way to beat them is not by invading their countries and "liberating" them. The way to beat them is by eliminating the fear they create. Stopping the bombings is just a small step. The big moves against terror are in what we do after these attacks are thwarted. Don't cower in fear, say "HA! Caught you! What we have is effectitive and there's nothing you can do about it." Showing them that their attempts are futile is how you beat terror. What we're doing is just giving in to them.
