Aloha to all of you out there in SGLand! It's been a long while since I've done my word/poem of the day, so here we go
(I stumbled across my graphic novel of The Crow by J O'Barr and found one of my favorite poems
)
WORD OF THE DAY:
Dunkirk n 1: a retreat to avoid total defeat *2: a crisis situation that requires a desperate last effort to forestall certain failure
*"Congress can avoid an economic Dunkirk by looking to the recent past." -- LOS ANGELES TIMES, DECEMBER 26, 2003
"Dunkirk" is the English spelling of the name of the French town of Dunkerque, located on the Dover Strait near the Belgian border. In the spring of 1940, Dunkerque was the scene of a massive evacuation of Allied forces to England after the fall of France to Germany during WII. Death seemed certain for the 300,000 soldiers who had retreated to Dunkerque until hundreds of naval and civilian vessels arrived to ferry them to safety. The impact of the event was so great that within a year "Dunkirk" was being used for any military retreat carried out to avoid total defeat. Soon after, the word was extended beyond the military sphere, and it is now used for any crisis that needs a miracle to save the day.
POEM OF THE DAY:
BEING BEAUTEOUS
by Arthur Rimbaud
Against a fall of snow, a being beautiful, and tall
Whistlings of death and circles of faint music
Make this adored body, swelling and trembling
Like a specter, rise...
Black and scarlet gashes burst in the gleaming flesh.
The true colors of life grow dark,
Shimmer and separate
In the scaffolding around the vision.
Shiverings mutter and rise,
And the furious taste of these effects is charged
With deadly whistlings and raucous music
That the world, far between us, hurls up at our mother of beauty...
She retreats us, she rises up...
O ash-white face
O tousled hair
O crystal arms!
On this cannon I mean to destroy myself
In a swirling of trees and soft air!

Alrighty, I think that is, unfortunately, all I have for tonight. I am so sleepy...had a great time bowling last night and have a bit a of a hangover today. I am probably going to stuff my face and go to sleep
BUT! I have a day off (finally) tomorrow- so I am sure I'll be in and out
-and maybe I'll even take some pictures
And to all a good night
xoxo
