E.J. Thorne by Mr_Reliable
My boyfriend tattooed this portrait of my grandfather on my forearm.
E.J. Thorne, an opera singer before Pearl Harbor, was a P51 Mustang pilot in the European theater of World War II. His plane was named Princess Pat after my grandmother, whom he had not married yet. He was stationed in England where he learned to love Guinness. He was prisoner of the Germans after his plane was shot down. When he got home he married Pat, eventually earning his Ph.D. He taught at Northwestern College Iowa. From him my mother learned how to work on cars and how to love Guinness. My grandmother, Princess Pat, and E.J. also instilled in their descendants a lifelong love of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pat died of Alzheimer's related complications, and now E.J. is 91. He is in good health for a man of his age but life is hard, and he has forgotten many things. He does remember the war and his service, of which he is rightfully proud. And he remembers the great love story that transpired between him and my grandmother.
I love him immensely. He does not recognize me anymore but it doesn't matter; he was the best grandfather a girl could wish for all my life. I am thrilled to have this incredible portrait of him as a young pilot on me for ever.
