i distinctly remember hearing the 2006 song of the year "sometimes you can't make it on your own" the night i broke up with someone in november 2004. they played it on the oc. there were tears.
and that song "this love" by maroon 5? that was spring 2004!!
Perhaps the nostalgia cycle has become so short that bands are now releasing covers of songs that are only 2 or 3 years old, in some cases the very bands that first recorded them 2-3 years ago.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach is my hometown. It's definitely a Navy town, but Virginia Beach is a soulless expanse of strip malls, whereas Norfolk has historical areas and culture and all the creative people who've fled the 'burbs. Even to someone wo chooses to live in NY, there's something nice about little pockets of coolness, where there are only so many bars, but they're good, so you know where to find everybody.
