Whoa, unless the 85-87 MR2 has a shorter wheelbase then the VW Beetle (and I don't think it does), then switching the engine/transaxle from the MR2 to the Beetle looks like an insanely easy thing to do. Course, then there's the whole having to wire it up and whatnot, and get it some fuel.
But I've addressed that. Just put an eight gallon (or two - one on each side) fuel cell where the backseats go.
In fact, the only foreseeable major problem is the transmission location. The MR2 is a two seater. The VW is a four seater. So the shifter will be located about where the backseat would be in the VW. So, I'd have to make a wicked shifter, like an upside down L shape. Ok, ok, maybe not the coolest thing in the world, but definitely interesting. Unless I built it so the shifter came out of a tunnel that could double as an arm rest. Lol. No one would be able to steal it cause they'd have an interesting time trying to figure out how to shift it (this is taking into account the average intelligence of a car thief).

I thought the MR2 had it's engine in front of the transaxle , so the engine would practically be in your back seat and the shifter wouldn't be too far out of position , that is if you plan too drop the whole engine and transaxle into the bug
