I've managed to confuse myself greatly with how much I loved "How To Train Your Dragon"
Dreamworks don't have a fantastic track record when it comes to CGI animation. Although I quite like Shrek and Kung-Fu Panda, I can't help but be cynical about Shark Tale or Madagascar, the latter of which was basically "Small animals sing Reel 2 Reel" The fact that theyre horrendously stunt-casted doesnt help either.
I only really checked out Dragon based on an awesome write-up on Slashfilm that was 2 steps short of "Plleeeeease go see the damn film!" but I'm really glad I did. It's essentially a boy and his dog story, but theyve managed to make the dragon, Toothless, a stupidly entertaining character just through the animation and it's mannerisms. The Dreamworks of old would've had it crack wise with a voice provided by Will.I.Am
The 3D is awesome, and from a purely "it really feels like flying" point of view I think I prefered those sequences to the nearest Avatar equivalent. Also it stars Jay Baruchel who I'm a little bit gay for, if I'm honest.
Seriously, check it out. It's Pixar-caliber stuff

I like to pretend that Shark Tale and Madagascar were never made by them.
