Today I'm taking the day off from work. This marks the end of a statute of limitations on a case that I never filed.
So, I'm taking the day to reflect and accept that "it's over." There's nothing that can be done at this point. After talking with several lawyers, the most optimistic told me that I did have a case but it'd be long & difficult and the gain would be little more than a moral victory. Lawyers don't work for moral victories.
(The most I could have won would have been $12,000 and that would have been eaten up just trying to get to court--and then maybe losing the case, or being awarded smething much less than $12,000.)
But as I reflect, I do remind myself that I won an initial hearing, was awarded some money. So, I accept that as being my victory and can move on.
One lesson that comes out of this: justice is expensive and you gotta be ready to step up and play hardball.
I do thank the 2 lawyers who took the time to explain to me what I was up against. I had phoned dozens who told me that I had nothing. Turns out that "nothing" really meant their potential gain wasn't worth the hassle. One lawyer explained that a firm might decide to put a plaintiff through the ringer before settling, just to send the signal that they don't just hand out money. He mentioned a case where $5000 worth of resources were put into a case that they settled for $500.
So, this case is over. I'm done with it.
Now I'll spend the rest of this day playing my bass and tending to my aquarium.
