Thesis:
Throughout the span of time chairs have had an intriguing history, while dealing with the demands of a changing world, and they continue to be important in everyday life.
What are you doing as you read this? Chances are you're sitting in a chair. Did you ever stop to think about where chairs came from or why they were invented? More than likely you have been taking chairs for granted your whole life. Here you will learn that throughout the span of time chairs have had an intriguing history, while dealing with the demands of a changing world, and they continue to be important in everyday life. So take a seat and start to appreciate theses everyday often overlooked items of comfort.
Was there ever a time when man didn't have something comfortable to rest on? History shows that early man would gather up soft items, such as leaves and grass, to make a comfortable seating spot. Chairs as we know them however did not show up in history till early Egyptian times, around 3000 - 2500B.C. Nearly all the people shown in early chairs are Kings, Pharaohs and other nobility. It wasn't till the late 17th Century that the French were credited with creating the first lightweight and comfortable chairs. The word chair comes from the Latin word "Cathedra" which has to do with the seats of Bishops in the Catholic Church. So as you can see man has always had the want to for some place to rest comfortably since the beginning of history.
Over time chairs have changed from who used them, what they looked like, where you would find them, and how chairs were designed to fit certain needs. When the first known chairs were around they were strictly used for kings and the ruling class. The earliest chairs were no more than a curved seat that normally contained a pillow which the ruler would seat himself. Around 600-500 B.C. you start to see the tradition chair start to show up in Greek and Roman art work, that being a seat with a back. Throughout the years you gradually see chairs become extremely stylized and more a wealthy decoration than actual usefulness for the common man. It wasn't until the late 18th Century that chairs became common in every household around the world. Since then chairs have evolved from simple traditional chairs, a seat with four legs and a square back, to highly decorative chairs intent on seducing all your senses. During the past few decades the design of chairs has even become more in depth with the studies of ergonomics and the effects sitting can have on the human body for long periods of time. Furthermore chairs have even had their designs tailored for where they would be used, such as highly ergonomic office chairs, recliners for home use, and even chairs designed for outdoor use such as on a deck. Chairs have had numerous design changes from start to finish and one can only guess where they'll be going in the future.
The importance of chairs is often over-looked here you'll find out that chairs have been involved in some of the world's most important events, and also the effect chairs have on you every day. Did you know when the King and Queen of Spain were given the news by Christopher Columbus that he had discovered the Americas they were sitting in a chair? Hard to believe but nearly all the major world events were taken place while the iconic figures sat in chairs. Signing of the Declaration of independence, the Treaty of Versailles, and even when Moses said in the Bible, "LET MY PEOPLE GO!" chairs were in the picture. Chairs have played a much underrated roll in the history of the world. Even today you've probably sat in three different chairs, maybe even in the same house or building. Think about it chairs play a very important role in your life today. Chairs are where we spend a great deal of time while we're awake, whether it's in your home, office, or school. After you think about it this may cause you to ask, "What will the chairs of the future hold?" The answer is nobody knows. The chair of the future is something that holds great possibility and promise. Maybe a hover chair is in the near future, or maybe chairs that can serve you a drink or help you pick a television show. The truth is after seeing how big a role the chair has played in our past, how much chairs are a part of our lives today, the chair of the future can only hold amazing possibilities.
Thinking about chairs you start to realize how important they are to the world and how much they should mean to you. Think about all the times chairs have been there at important times in your life. Think about your favorite chair and how you feel when you sit down in it after a long day. Now realize that every man woman and child on earth also have the same feeling when they recall their memories of their favorite chair. So I ask you this, if there was a symbol every person on the earth could relate with would it not be a chair? Next time you see your fellow man know that no matter what color his skin, his educational background, or his social upbringing, you know that just like you he has a favorite chair.
