Japan.
In keeping with my tradition of rarely updating my blog, here is another belated post, this time with travel pics that had yet to have seen the light of day (despite the holiday being some time ago).
They're from my first trip abroad, where I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Japan.
Specifically, Tokyo.
I really couldn't say enough positive things about my experience there, and I have absolutely no hesitations recommending the place as a travel destination. Just go.
I generally prefer shooting photos in a controlled (contrived) environment. I like being able to pose and direct the subject, and to control the lighting and framing, and so taking random shots of things as I walked around the streets of this magnificent city was definitely a new challenge. I fin it hard to objectively appraise these shots too, because to me they represent the way that I personally saw the place. They are like snapshots of my memories, and to an extent they colour my recollections - so it is hard to identify whether they look exactly as I saw it, or whether I only remember it that way because of the photographs.
In a way this makes me question the narratives we derive from candid photography. We tend to ascribe a higher level of credulity to candid works, but I wonder whether like a good mockumentary, the photographer has just mastered the art of making the viewer suspend just enough disbelief to take delivery of the narrative in the exact way they want them to.
This is way too heavy for 8:26am. That coffee must have had something in it.
enjoy the photos.

As for the people... I'm not sure. My cousin's in town. She's a 23yr old girl and has been snapping away like crazy here. One guy actually came right up to her today and confronted her about whether she'd taken a photo of him! As it happens, she hadn't, and replied so. But you see... that'd freak me out. :s I get the impression that people are a little more suspicious in this city...
Hope you're well! xo
