August ends tomorrow. Where did the summer go to?
Three months ago, I kicked off an internship with the sheriff's office. I'm happy with my decision to do so - I learned a lot through that. Enough to actually apply for a job as a sworn deputy there. I just hope I'm prepared to have to see death up close. I caught a glimpse last month when I toured the county coroner's office. Inside, there was one nameless, faceless person having an autopsy done on them. Another stared up at me from a gurney, his lifeless eyes seemingly looking into my soul. Three others lay inside a cold storage room - two had toe tags on them, another still awaiting autopsy. Someone's parent, I was told - the person had committed suicide. The sights, sounds and smells from that day still haunt me.
I finished off my summer semester with relative ease. I passed my principles of criminal law class with a solid A, and make it through my internship with a B. Now, I test in on September 22nd, followed in short order by oral boards at some point in October. I hope to be aboard soon.
This week marked the start of the fall semester. So far, it hasn't been too bad. I admit being disappointed by Criminal Investigations II already - the class is nothing like I hoped it would be. Instead, it's more and more Power Point slideshows, and more videos of 1990s era A&E true crime specials narrated by Bill Curtis. I'd rather see the guy shipped off to Mars, honestly - the guy's monotone voice irritates the hell out of me. When will we get some actual hands-on experience in the field?
My spanish class started this week, too. For what it's worth, I like it. Spanish, I think, is a beautiful language if spoken properly. I'm hoping to become a fluent speaker of the language by the end of the semester. On the other end of the spectrum, I started a physical fitness course yesterday. The story so far? Exhaustion. I've knocked out two workouts already, staying in the fitness center for at least an hour and a half to two hours at a time. I do get exhausted from constantly alternating between the different weight machines on the floor and the stationary bicycle, but damn it - it feels good. I haven't worked out like this in years. It should do wonders for my self-esteem.
Late next month begins my third season (second year - started working there in 2010) working for one of Colorado Springs' seasonal haunted houses. I have to say I'm impressed by the amount of space we have to work with this year - 16,000 square feet of room, with an entire city literally built under one roof. The owner canned almost everyone who has been there the last two years, with the exception of me and three other people he still trusts. It will be strange at first, but I could get used to this. We've done a lot of work getting this place built up since early April, and honestly I always look forward to working with the owner of this place every year. He's such an awesome guy.
Anyways, that's enough for now. I'll probably address the recent GOP flaps in my next post. Stay tuned, dear readers - we're in for one hell of a fall election season!

That's a pretty solid update. Good luck on everything. I have a field trip to the coroners office in three weeks!

Thanks very much! I wish you luck with your trip to the coroner's office. Just remember to ask as many questions as you can. They're more than willingly to answer anything you want to ask, and will do their best to help get you trained up in some small way for your career.
