Talking to a young coworker and he asked me the other day, "Hey Shane, you're good at talking to women..."
"Cuz women are people, and I'm good at talking to people, but go on," I said.
"...and there's this girl at my gym that I think might be into me..."
"I'm probably the wrong person to ask about this, since I don't think women are into ME, but keep going," I interrupted.
"...but I'm not sure if she is, or is just being friendly. I mean, she smiles when she sees me, and we talk a little bit in between sets and stuff, and she laughs at my jokes, but I don't wanna shoot my shot and maybe make things awkward, you know? I really like this gym, and I do enjoy talking to her."
"OK, how long have you been talking to her? Roughly time and how many times."
He thought about it. "I noticed her about a month ago, and we have talked roughly 7 or so times since I asked her if she had finished her reps on a machine I wanted to use."
"OK, and during that time I'm assuming you've talked about more than working out, right?" He nodded. "Have you complimented her? Not in a creepy way, but showing you noticed her."
He thought about it. "Yeah, she came in with a new workout outfit, and I told her the colors looked nice on her."
"OK, good, not creepy at all. Now, in ALL this time, has she EVER given you any kind of compliment? Noticed anything about your appearance, told you you're funny, anything like that?"
He thought some more. "No, nothing like that at all."
I sighed. "Then, she is just being friendly and maybe just likes having someone to talk to at the gym. I don't think she's into you, but hey what do I know?"
His shoulders slumped. "Yeah, you're probably right. Thanks man."
