Requested by @fredhincanada (not sure if I can do all of them, most days it takes all my energy to not give into the darkness), but I shall try my friend.
Books have always been my 1st love (been reading since I was 3), but as I've gotten older I've noticed that some books/series when read again are seen in a different light.
1. The Dragonlance Chronicles by Weiss and Hickman
When I first stumbled across these, I fell in love with the world of Krynn and the tales of these group of people, friends and family, trying to do their best to hold off the darkness. I have all the original copies (yes, with the Larry Elmore art on the front), and about 7 or 8 years ago I went back and re-read them. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Plot twists seen a mile away, clunky dialogue, and things the writer in me cringed at (different speakers in the same paragraph, switching inner monologue within the same chapter without a break to denote such changes); but, it was one of the reasons I tried -and failed- to be a writer, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Now if WotC can just stop fucking with the setting and either do it right (or release the rights), then I would be happy.
2. The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson
Honestly, the main reason I wanted to be a writer (and are still incapable of writing anything less than BIG), these books have left such a mark on me that I have a quote from one of the main characters tattooed as an arm band. I've read and re-read the series at least 6 or 7 times (yes, the whole series); but this last time I read it? I couldn't help but notice how old-fashioned (and I don't mean that in a good way) Jordan viewed men and women. Still love the world he built and the series ending was well done -heartbreaking yet hopeful- but it's still not as "good" as I once viewed it to be.
3. The Farseer series (the 9 books with FitzChivalry and the Fool) by Robin Hobb
Re-reading these again, and while I can understand why some may not care for them, they hold a special place in my heart. Never has a character gone through so much throughout the books (at least, that's my opinion); his pain, his joy, his loneliness and anger, it's no wonder why he ranks as one of my top 5 fictional written characters (another being Raistlin Majere, who I have tattooed as the Magician Tarot card on my chest). Absolutely incredible writing on her part.
So there you go. If anyone wants to do this, then consider yourself tagged. Thanks for reading.
