I was talking to a buddy and he asked what I thought was a good first date, and I told him it depends. If it's someone you've been friends with for a while, and you know their interests, you should tailor the date to that; otherwise, meeting up for coffee is the best first date.
"Sounds so basic and boring," he said.
But it's not, I countered. A coffee shop is very public, you're not supposed to linger there for hours and hours, and you can still have a good conversation and get to know them. But, if they're not what you were hoping for (if they're racist, homophobic, ignorant, etc...), then after the coffee -or even before, if you already get a bad vibe- you can just leave. You didn't waste a bunch of time or money, and you can move on with your day.
However, if things go well, and neither of you wants the date to stop, then you should go somewhere with food and something to play (pool, video games, etc...). Movies should generally be reserved for the 2nd or 3rd date, since you can't talk to each other during a movie. But that's just my perspective, and since it's been 4 1/2 years since I've been on a date, I might not be the best person for advice LOL
