Getting divorced was one of the better things that's happened to me in my life.
I said that the other day, and I've said it in the past, and often when I say it (to people who haven't known me that well or long), they'll first ask, "Oh, was she a bitch?"
Nope, I reply.
"Was she an addict?"
Also no, I say.
"She spent all of the money?"
Not that either, I'll chuckle.
I then tell them: getting divorced forced me to work on myself (something I didn't do, no matter how much she asked me when we were together) and forced me to actually be a dad to my kids (up until then, I was just their father). Sure, it was painful at times, but true growth usually is. And, as I now like to say, the relationship didn't fail, it just ended. All things eventually end; doesn't make it "good" or "bad", it just is.
