Here in the states it's the 4th of July (or Independence Day) and for a lot of people it's a time for BBQs, drinking, and lighting fireworks. For me, this holiday has never been fun, too many bad memories. When I was young, my dad and uncle got into a fist fight on the 4th one year and I didn't see my cousins for another 4 years after that; our dog ran away when I was a kid on the 4th; and one year I stepped on a sparkler with my bare feet that someone had discarded in the high grass. Those are just the most awful memories, but I have never had any good memories on this day. So yeah, while I am happy to be an American (though I recognize that there are a lot of things we could change to be better as a country), I just don't feel like celebrating today...
