I just read over on Tiny Mix Tapes that Cap'n Jazz are reuniting, which I think is pretty cool. I think...
I mean, the last few years has seen some of my favourite bands get back together: Far, The Get Up Kids and Sunny Day Real Estate, to name a few. Which as a whole, has been awesome. Not so much for the want of new music, but more for the fact that it's given me a chance to see them live again, or in some cases for the first time.
But this is where I have a problem. I'm not adverse to these bands writing new music, but there is always going to be that fear and anxiety hanging over my head, that they just won't be able to improve on what they did 10 or 15 years ago. Can these bands be relevant again? And where do they fit into the current "scene"? A lot has changed musically since the days where these bands shone. Case in point, Rival Schools have a new album coming out this year, and I can't imagine what it's going to sound like. 'United by Fate' was released 8 years ago now, and while I would welcome a follow up in the same vein, I think it would sit well with other fans, but not necessarily win over any new fans. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.
On the other hand there are bands that I wish would just stay dead: Pavement. I like Pavement. In fact, I like Pavement quite a lot. But theirs is a reunion that just seems to reek of money. The band aren't known for being the best of friends since the split, especially with Malkmus going on to be relatively successful, while the others seemed to fall off the radar. What makes their reunion even more cringe worthy and disappointing in my eyes, is the fact that one member said only 2 years ago that if they ever got back onstage together, it would be for the money. And it's with that in mind that I made absolutely no effort to get tickets for their stint in London. It may be a mistake on my part, as the gigs might be incredible. I just don't think I'd be able to shake the fact that at least one person on stage probably doesn't want to be there. And that's enough of a reason for me not to indulge them.
But yes, I'm actually excited about this Cap'n Jazz reunion. There's just something about the Kinsella's where I feel like I can trust them to deliver, and they wouldn't be doing this if it weren't what they really wanted to do. It's not like they haven't had enough going on in the form of relatively successful projects since Cap'n Jazz split. Let's just wait and see. All I ask is that they do a European gig, and they play the 90120 theme tune. A boy can dream.
