Thank you @elune for nominating me.
As with everyone, choosing just one song is almost an impossibility. Do I go with my favorite artist? Belinda Carlisle, if you are interested. That would make it even more difficult since I love so much of her work. No, I will have to go with a song that evokes a strong memory, not in general, but of a very specific time and incident. Cyndi Lauper's I Drove All Night.
As it happens, it was the Spring of 1989 and this was the first time Karen and I were separated in our dating life. We were still in Texas, I was living 4 hours away working and she was still at school. I got out of work, got in my truck (with no cruise control) and drove the 4 hours there. Got stopped for speeding, blew a tire out on the truck, turned out to be more of a 7 hour trip. I got there late at night when she was getting ready to go to sleep. We said a rushed hello (she was living in a house with several roommates) and we crawled into her bed, curled up, and went to sleep. It's such a visceral memory, especially of that tire blowing out, it being dark, on a road overlooking the lights of San Antonio, so close I could see the city, but so far away now. It was frustrating. And the relief to finally get there and feel like I was home when we curled up is a feeling I'll never forget.
So there you have it, my favorite song and the memories that go with it.
Much love to you all. Have a great day. MWAH!
