@bloghomework this week asks: If you could run your own business, what would it be?
I love this week's blog homework because I think about this all the time... I currently work in a state office and it is one of the most soul sucking jobs I've ever had. It's tedious and there is no room for creativity. There are a few cool people, but a lot of the employees are just typical state workers - meaning they avoid work at all costs, drone on about mundane details of their lives constantly and nothing is ever as efficient as it could be. Everything we work on seems to be about policy and processes and bureaucracy... but nothing is efficient! It's crazy-making.
When we are slow I sit at my desk, pray the phone doesn't ring and daydream about what I would do if I could run my own business. I would make art and handmade books and sell them online. I love to draw and my best friend Liz taught me how to do book binding and I could do both from the comfort of my own home! The benefits would be numerous to say the least! 1. No dress code to adhere to! Including covering my tattoos 2. No annoying coworkers to deal with 3. I would get to cultivate my creative side - I think this would make me a lot happier in general.
I do have an Etsy shop and have sold a few things, but I've never thrown myself into it how I should to really get it going. This should be the year I really make my art a priority! Some how I leave it til last because it just seems like there's always something else I should be doing instead of drawing. I think I get lost in the inspiration part as well reading / checking out artists / writing / planning...
Anyway, here's some inspiration I have in my craft room - including some things I did.
I've had a copy of one of my all time favorite stories hanging up for years and I read it all the time - it still gives me this particular, unique feeling when I read it and makes me feel very inspired.
I really like to draw stuff like this - sorry for the glare.
Look at all those markers - delicious!! Markers and pens are my favorite medium because I am a giant child. My husband got me these prisma colors because he loves me a little bit.
Bettie Page keeps me in line and also slightly aroused.
Here's a book my friend Liz made for me with her own two adorable little hands - look how perfect it is! Mine don't quite look like that yet lol. I need more practice.
And here's me with a good chunk of my personal library.
So there you have it! If I was going to have my own business I would hermit it up in my craft room everyday and draw, make books and probably take nudes if I'm being completely honest ;) I like to think one day I will actually take a stab at doing this, it's just a matter of being ready to take that leap of faith.
Hope everyone is having a lovely day,
<3
