it's ironic that while all the nasty high-school debate club style threads have been all over the boards, that i've been reading 'ethics for a new millennium' by the dalai lama at the same time. it's interesting to compare some of the more bloodthirsty discussions to the pragmatic calm i find in this book. his words are like a beautiful warm quilt of reason and light, that i can wrap around myself before i fall asleep.
i believe that personal responsibility is necessary in all situations. i also believe that a strong sense of goodwill and compassion is equally necessary.
a society that values personal responsibility, but not compassion, is greedy, paranoid, and violent.
a society that values compassion, but not personal responsibility, is lazy and deluded.
but the two together, all problems can be solved. everyone can help themselves, and each other.
it is that simple.
