pain is there to remind us that we're alive, living human bodies with soft squishy parts and fluids that sometimes slosh around in the wrong way, and tubes that carry bottled messages from one end of the maze to other. here is an example of such a message:

"hello, stomach lining, this is the nose. right now i smell something really yummy. you should be ready to handle more digestive juices because you're about to get a special treat!"

millions of these messages cross by the second, between glands and organs and tissue. sometimes the brain steps in and shakes things up a bit. but for the most part, it's an ideal anarchy: a free society of open exchange and cooperation.

the system breaks down when the needs of outsiders come into question. these outsiders might be a virus, a bacterium, or one of the many varieties of mycoplasma.

this is what i was thinking about last night, as i struggled to fall asleep for the second, third, sixth time, acutely aware of my body and its sore throat. but tonight, the white stripes are playing, and i'll use that time to forget about everything and rock out with my index and pinky fingers fully extended to the devil position.
