"the idea of a rectangle exists only as an idea, which is easy for rectangles and difficult for most ideas"
- Donald Judd
I've been so quiet because I've barely been keeping up with myself, let alone managing to find some way to pin it down and make a little sense of it. Damit, I want everything (or at least something) in this here life to be tangible and concrete, for one moment only.
I used to get pissed off at this city(Edinburgh), it's slightly self-important sense of "culture" and "history" which always seems to be a useful way of avoiding the risky business of having an sort of real life at all. Something the critic Karl Kraus said about the hollowness of fin-de-siecle Vienna rings true: "the streets of Paris, Berlin and London are paved with Asphalt, the streets of Vienna are paved with culture...." it suffocates everything it claims to represent.
Edinburgh has the Festival, and for a couple of weeks in August it comes alive a little (something approximating a heartbeat), but nothing like a scene, people doing things for themselves and making it wor.
And then this weekend going to a couple of art event-opening type things and feeling for the first time in years that we were part of something. Maybe a clique, or subscribing to the delusions of scenesters the world over.... but god, it felt good to be around people and not have to explain or apologise for the things that I find interesting or exciting (see above quote..)
Rant over.
