.Blame Canada!.
the story of "the blackout of '03" as told by RxQueen.
I'm sure you all know the saying, "when it rains, it pours". Well that sums up my yesterday.
I had just started to clean, put on the distillers and was swiffering. The room suddenly went silent. The clocks were out but the time on my phone was a little after 4pm. I wasn't sure if it was just my house, so i went outside to see if i could hear anyone elses air conditioners on. Nope. Along with the power, there was no cellphone service either, and my house phone wouldn't work cos its evil.
David came over to pick up my sister. He said all of westchester county that had no juice. Hmmm. I finally got around to shoving almost dead batteries into my ol' skool boombox. "REGIONAL?!?!?" Was the first word out of my mouth. First thought: Terrorism.
Of course the second after "terrorism" came to mind the girl on the radio said the officials were pretty sure that had nothing to do with anything.
Listening to Hillary Clinton made me laugh. "And of course this has to happen on the FIRST HOT DAY" --- WOMAN, what on earth are you talking about? She spends way too much time in air conditioning and ZERO time outside.
After seeing David I cried alot (he was my best friend for years - but i wont get into this now).
Then i called my Scottness to see what was going on up by him. I think that was probably around 8ish. It was getting dark. We (my sister and I) placed candles around the house so we could light them when we needed. I went outside with my discman and the pixies and just looked up at the stars which i could actually see cos there were NO lights. It was really gorgeous last night.
Candles, flashlights and head lights on cars were the only things illuminating the streets of new york.
Driving was horrid and you probably didn't want to do it if you didn't have gas - cos you couldn't get any.
My mom was upstate doing New York Guard stuff, she called to tell us she wasn't coming home. She probably won't be until tonight. Yay!
I convinced my sister to pull out some pot so we'd have s o m e t h i n g to do. She did but we didn't have a philly and her pipe is broken.
Outside at 1am looked like it could have been 5am. The moon was so so bright. Tho not quite full, it still lit the sky. Its hard to want to stay awake when yr so damn bored. Like yr brain has some sort of self-defense mechanism, if its too idle it just wants to shut off.
So before i went to bed i called Scott again. Then i listened to nirvana covering my sharona. I figured if i do things that make me happy before i go to sleep the chances of my dreams being awesome are greater.
But i don't even remember what i dreamed of cos i woke up every 45 min. I slept on the loveseat cos it was too hot upstairs and i was soooooooo uncomfortable. I was bent in ways people aren't supposed to bend. Now i ache.
The power started coming back on between 4-7am.
I think as of right now 95% of jersey got its power back, 50% of nyc/westchester, 75% of Long Island
(pffft who cares about LI anyway ). Although, Jersey, Long Island and Westchester county are still suffering rolling blackouts (g.damn it)
The subways /metro north/lirr are all still down. The busses are free. The ferrys are crowded.
I'm glad i'm at home.
I NY.
and that statement is 100% sarcasm free.

Natalie, you with short hair would probably mean I'd go into a sex-crazed fervor and be over to NY to hump you so fast I'd probably accidentally transport into an evil alternate universe where you're not the coolest girl I've ever known and pizza tastes like ass.
