Some people just like easy targets. Explain yourself and don't back down. There is no way they can actually do anything if you are off due to an existing condition, it would be totally illegal.
Also in my experience HR people become HR people because they are rubbish at being just people. If it doesn't have a rule and a limit they don't understand. Hassle them, don't wait for an answer.

Agggh, those hands! My dad once had some of those Freddie Krueger hands. He brought A Nightmare on Elm Street for my sister to watch with her friends, and hid down the back of the sofa with the hand on. It was comedy gold. Glad you had a good time.
