My musical top 10, pretty well, dates me. But there is a band that several young people seem to like along with me
It is none other than those four lads from Liverpool who exploded onto the scene a half century ago!
Yes, I was watching on our family's black and white T.V. when the Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show My parents response was priceless: " Their hair is too long!" (it was less than half as long as mine would become) " They look like beatnicks!" ( they wore suits and ties)
" That noise they call music will never last!" ( 50 years later, young people on this site are still listing The Beatles among their top 10 bands) The Beatles hit American culture like a tsunami. I honestly have never seen anything that even approaches it since. When the Beatles played live, you couldn't hear them because of all the screams in the crowd. They couldn't go out in public for fear of being mobbed. They were even mauled once or twice in their own hotel suite by fans who found out where they were, and broke in.
The Beatles weren't just a band. They defined a generation. We grew with them. We saw take off. We saw them mature ( from "She loves you YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!" to " Eleanor Rigby died in the church, and was buried along with her name" ) We saw them clowning. We saw them try drugs. We saw them meditate. We saw them walk across Abby rd., with Paul bare-foot, which means he's dead ( don't tell him!) We saw them create. We saw fight. We saw them break up. And we will never get over it. But I'm o.k. I get by with a little help from my S.G. friends
