I’m so proud of my Sister. We almost lost her 2 years ago. She worked in her local Parole and Probation Department as an ankle monitor liaison. One day she got a text to go to a crime scene and cut off the monitor from someone who died while committing a crime. She described him as very sickly. They gave her no mask or gloves. The next week her organs began shutting down, there was no way to keep enough potassium in her system to stop frequent cardiac events. She lost 140 pounds in 3 months. Eventually she was diagnosed with a rare form of plague. Now she can’t work but has happily regained most of her health. Her primary desire in life today is to create unique handcrafted quilts and quilted wall art from scratch. She loves going to estate sales, yard sales and flea markets looking for vintage fabrics which is all she uses in her designs. Then… she gives, save a few for personal needs, them away as gifts to family and friends. At last count at least 16 are cherished and in the use of others, myself included.
This is her latest creation, a montage of Van Gogh’s works. All hand stitched from shreds of vintage fabric. The quilt itself is new, the fabrics are between 60-100 years old. She searched for a very long time for a fabric piece big enough to make the border. She thought of maybe piecing together multicolored scraps… until she found a vintage gown for sale at a local thrift store. This became the “starry nights” border. Voila!
