It's been quite a week, and it's not even finished yet!
starr_light and I headed to Vancouver on Monday night to be in town for a pair of meetings on Tuesday, the first meeting was one of the office's regular update meetings, but it was the second that was the most interesting of the two. My tribe is embarking on information sessions for each of the four major populations centers for our community: Vancouver, Victoria, Port Alberni and our reserve on the West Coast of the Island. It's been good to see people that I haven't seen in quite a while, and after Tuesday, I started to give the presentation for the department that I'm working with right now: governance.
It's gone well so far, I don't have too much of a problem with public speaking, but I still get some jitters.
Luckily, I know the topic well and I'm (comparatively) passionate about treaties and self-government.
We've been doing a lot of traveling: Port Alberni to Nanaimo, Nanaimo to Vancouver, Tsawassen to Victoria, Victoria to Port Alberni and tomorrow: Port Alberni to Anacla, near Bamfield -- ninety minutes by dirt road.
If you've ever taken biology in secondary school or university, it's possible that you've heard of Anacla.
Anyway, I'm excited by the prospect of connecting with the community and finally getting to do some public speaking again. The last time I did it was at UVic at an Admin and Management Course I took with other tribal government workers from other First Nations.
I love the travel. starr_light, not so much... but we're home tonight and it's good to be home.
I don't even mind the burnt cookie smell.
Movie on Saturday, we're seeing Milk.
