when I got out of the Coast Guard, my brother and sister flew out to meet me in Seattle and we set out driving across the country.
tracing the coastline South we stopped briefly in San Francisco
this is the Palace of Fine Arts - my sister Clare, my HighSchool friend Brendan & I
taking turns at the wheel and driving non-stop to points of interest, we lingered in the Rocky Mountains. One eatery in Colorado stands out - you walked up to what looked like a butcher shop and ordered a cut of meat, thereupon you mounted to a very large grill with a variety of sauces and cooked your own steak
my sister had to fly back to NYC from Denver - my brother and I pressed on through the prairie states of Nebraska and Iowa. I jumped in the Mississippi River, the Big Muddy (I have a tendency to jump into substantial bodies of water)
my brother went back to NYC when we reached Chicago
I went all the way - and landed on the Maine coast
we plan to do it again in 20 years or so - on Harley-Davidsons

But 'bohemian shaggy' and pretty are not mutually exclusive. Shaggy, or shabby, are usually just part of the pose. It's the genuinely shabby that has disappeared from the public sphere.

now that is a trip to look forward to. my sister and I have been talking about doing a roller coaster tour of north america, but I'm not sure we'll ever get our asses in gear and do it. I'm sure it would involve several months of cheap motels.
