So the President won the Nobel Peace Prize today, and of course, the commentariat pounced. Man, Chicago loses the Olympics, and it's cause for criticism. He wins a prize, and it's cause for criticism. Tune in next week when Obama drinks a glass of water, and the right erupts.
Did he deserve the award? No, probably not* . You know who else thinks that? Obama, according to his remarks this morning.
some are saying he should have refused the thing as graciously as possible. Well just for the sake of argument, let's pop over to a nearby parallel universe where he did just that:
--------------------------
President Obama thanked the Nobel Committee, but insisted he could not in good conscience accept the award, citing the many other nominees who he felt were more deserving of the honor.
Right wing pundits were quick to pounce on Obama's refusal of the honor:
Rush Limbaugh: You know who else refused a Nobel Peace Prize? Le c Th, one of the founders of the Vietnamese Communist Party, one of the leaders of North Vietnam! I mean folks... (table slap, shuffle of papers)... I dunno, maybe he's one of Obama's heroes.
John Boehner: Well the press likes to talk about what a great diplomat the President is, if he's such a great diplomat why did he just slap the international community in the face?
Sean Hannity: Last week he goes to Europe begging for them to hold the Olympics in Chicago, and they refuse him. So this week, he refuses the Nobel Peace Prize. You know what this is? It's childish, it's sour grapes.
Glenn Beck: So now we're supposed to be impressed that Barack Obama refused an award he didn't deserve in the first place. Oh looks, he's so selfless, oh look, he's so wise. But everybody knows he won the award, everybody's going to write that he won the award, but now he refuses it, now he's extra special. This is how you build a cult of personality. I'm telling you, I think this was planned all along.
--------------------------
If you think the right wouldn't get just as much play out of him turning down the award, you are painfully naive.
* Seriously, I suspect this was more a "You're not George W. Bush!" award more than anything else

It's not spin that I hate, it's bad spin. This is where the Democratic party fails every single time.
