Company missed a key target because one group fucked around and didn't put in the work. Money lost, heads will roll.

What's worse is, this means I won't be able to go down to LA (yeah, was trying to make it something of a surprise - sorry.)

I always see hiring outside help. Or bringing in management ( ceo's ) from other companies. As a bad omen.
I never understood the theory on; how someone that doesn't care about the company ( only the money they're getting paid. ) as a good idea to have work on projects.
