I'm an artist, activist, best known for creating the punk protest collective Pussy Riot. Growing up in Russia, I studied philosophy at Moscow State University.
I was involved in activism since I was 16. Pussy Riot's “Punk Prayer” action in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was specifically aimed at challenging the Russian Orthodox Church’s public support for Vladimir Putin. Our trial became a global spectacle. I was sentenced to two years in a labor camp, bringing international attention to political repression in Russia and human rights abuses within the prison system. After my release, I co-founded Mediazona, an independent Russian news outlet focused on human rights abuses, particularly in the Russian prison system.
I continue making art and exhibit at galleries and museums, and occasionally do lectures at places like Yale, RIT, USC, and occasionally write for NYT and Guardian.
I'm on Russia's most wanted list for my feminist and anti-Putin art.
