Robert Smith was in the band at the time of the live recordings,, playing guitar. The official story as told by Banshees people is that Siouxsie found him playing in someone's garage in 1977, popped his cherry and taught him how to play his guitar and put makeup on. Da Eta Pravda.
I think they are the greatest band, unfortunately they are not known for their best work, but a couple of pop songs (their worst songs I might add) that made it onto KROQ around 1990 as the band members were approaching 40. They were around for 22 years and made some wonderful music, these songs should not disappear in the dust bin of history.
