The worst part of the fish tank being yukky was caused by fish food with the colour enhancer. I changed to a colourless food and so far so good, The new food I got was Wardleys. I think they have a whole range in food depending on your fish type. The bacteria bloom was also a part of this, but from what I am told it shouldn't have been as bad as it happened in my tank, and it definitely shouldn't smell. Also the filter bar should not point directly down and instead, tilt it so it goes more into the water on like a diagonal tilt. I also can tell so far that the air pump is helping too. .
I saw those tanks a few years ago on a visit up here, I swear I could sit there all day and stare
