OK, the trip to Florida was different than advertised, but I figured as much when I saw that the tickets getting cut for us were for Orlando. I can't really say I recommend Sebring or Avon Park to anyone interested in more than heavy amounts of drinking at a small number of bars and "nightclubs." On the other hand, if off-key Country Music Karaoke is your thing, well, pack your bags!

We did have fun with our rental, though. We got a brand new--as in 27 miles on the odometer--Ford Explorer with a coat of white paint just waiting to be abused. And, ladies and gentlemen, we beat the shit out of it. We took that Explorer out for all of our field training in the Air Force range there. Our logic was "Why take an uncomfortable Humvee when we have a vehicle that has all these luxuries and can supposedly do everything the former can as well?" Well, that kind of changed there, as my buddy and I released the sadists within us on that poor thing. When we rolled back to Orlando International, it was still dropping chunks of mud, had reeds, branches, twigs, etc., jammed in nearly every crevice. Disappointingly, Budget wouldn't take a payment in lieu of not washing it, so we lost 45 minutes we could have spent sitting aimlessly in the Airport. It was worth it, and I only regret not taking pictures. Ultimate verdict? Surprisingly fun vehicle off-road, but the fact that I had to re-fill the fuel tank every day and half of running it rough would be a pain the ass if it had to come out of my own pocket.

The aforementioned blind date from last week went rather well. I might have handled the first half hour or so better, but I was kind of shocked by the fact that this girl was much, much more beautiful than I expected her to be. I guess I had already made up my mind that this date was going to, well, suck and so I was in the mindset of "be a gentleman, be charming, show her a good time, and then disappear." So, having to re-evaluate my gameplan probably made for a comedy of errors for my friends. At any rate, everything worked out. I'm just hoping the two hour drive won't make it too much of a pain in the ass for me to meet her. I know I wouldn't want her coming to Fayetteville... she's never been here, and I don't look forward to marring her life that way. wink

That book on the Spartans (by Paul Cartledge) I was talking about? Looking like a bust so far. It occurred to me that, halfway through the book, it offers no more detail, insight, or original ideas, than it did in the introduction. The author offers a handful of his own theories, but refuses to go into detail, offer evidence, etc. The depictions of the people themselves, their customs, and their chief historical characters get a very slim overview in exchange for a general run through the timeline of important events in Sparta's time.

I think the amount of things the game gets right far outweighs the areas in which it falls short.

Does nothing please you?! Seriously though, what would you put in lieu of the Λ and the helmet?
