So I got in a "faux" fight the other night, unfortunately.
I was getting ready to leave base on my way to a dinner rendezvous, and I had just used the ATM machine by the main gate, when I walked by this guy and his (I'll assume, here) girlfriend.
Anyways, it's raining rather heavily. This guy is walking with an umbrella over him, and all I hear him say is "well, sorry, you should have brought your own." Curious, I look over, and he's not even trying to cover her!..
Fifty meters later, I just casually turn around and offer the girl my umbrella. "Why?" she says, and "better you stay dry than me" I says. She says thanks, unexpectedly gives me a kiss on the cheek, and walks off.
And then the boyfriend turns around and swings at me.
He telegraphed it, and I managed to duck it, but the damage had been done. Next thing you know, we have USAF security forces all over our asses, and nothing I say keeps them from cuffing me. So now we're sitting in a patrol car, separated from the one person who can dispute this guy's line of "he was hitting on my girlfriend and talking shit."
By the time it's all cleared up, I'm already fucking half an hour late for dinner, and my nice attire needs to be changed, courtesy of the water/mud puddles I was forced on while getting patted and cuffed.
Oh, apologies galore rolled in once the cops at the gate station managed to get with the cops reading us the riot act and doing the questioning thing in the car. It's all part of "zero tolerance" rules enacted after a number of fights broke out between visiting soldiers, airmen, marines, sailors, etc., of various ethnicities.
All this rolled over FAMOUSLY with the g/f, who needed a few hours to finally accept the fact I was telling the truth.
So in retrospect, considering everything I had to go through for doing nothing but DODGING the asshole, I wish I would have stepped into the side of his exposed kneecap while I was at it.
On the bright side?...
Well, I guess the Philadelphia Eagles did get the shit kicked out of them again. And the Greek Soccer team just needs one more win to finish on top of their EuroCup Division.
