It's been a while since I've posted anything.
We got a new baby chinchilla yesterday. He's a beige male. I'm not sure how old he is but he's about half or a third of the size of most full grown chinchillas I've seen. We named him Gir after my son's favorite cartoon character.
I'm a little upset because the cage that they suggested we get him has plastic latches and I didn't even think about it but last night he chewed almost all the way through his latch. Plastic can cause intestinal blocks in chinchillas which worries me. I found most of the pieces in his cage but I'm worried he might have swallowed some. We're going to see if they'll let us return the cage since they suggested it and get an all metal cage (This one is mostly metal except for a few parts). I'll keep an eye on him and if something seems wrong I'll take him to the vet, although I don't know if there is much they can do. I've read about people who have chinchillas that eat eveything; plastic, rubber, cloth; so I think he should be fine.
We already really like him. He's not shy or too skiddish, he's very friendly and likes to play. He also likes to chew on shoes. We try to keep him away from the shoes but he's a sneaky little bastard and tries different ways to distract us while he makes a run for the shoe rack. He likes to climb on Eric. I hope he's fine it would be a shame to lose him so soon.
This is the best picture I could get of him since he wouldn't hold still:
