with the recent passing of some great celebrities, @rambo @lyxzen and @missy assigned a bittersweet topic; what celebrity impacted us the most.
I'm sure in some ways, almost every celebrity influences our lives almost everyday. whether it's to buy their clothes, makeup, watch their movies, or listen to their music. but there's always those few that we relate to more than we care to admit.
if you haven't read any of my previous blogs, when I was younger I began to harm myself. it started out as a coping mechanism to deal with some fucked up shit that had happened to me, and it turned into a full blown awful addiction. i had started and stopped many times, always promising it would be my last cut. I turned to music and poetry to try and distract myself. that's when I found Otep.
Otep is a heavy metal artist, an animal rights activist, a beautiful poet, a lesbian, just a totally rad human being. I first came across her lyrics, which hit my heart strings. she had experienced some similar fucked up situations like I had, and turned to poetry to let them go. the only difference was her tongue was a weapon! her lyrics just punch you in the face. I had to YouTube her! this was the first video I found, the video that started my lifelong obsession with Otep Shamaya!
of course watching this video also made me realize that I was right about myself; I was definitely attracted to women! her music really was a complete escape for me and helped me to realize that I was not alone. being in a really small town I felt so alone and like no one could relate to how I was feeling or what I was going through. her music changed all of that for me. she also has a few books, I haven't read them but I do own them. my girlfriend has read them and has told me that they are just as striking as her music.
Now that I'm a bit older, I also have another celebrity that has helped me a lot, Lana Del Rey! another amazing lyricist. the one song that I relate to more than anything is Ride. it would make this blog terribly long if I were to go into how much and why I relate to this song the way I do. but for your pleasure, here is the video!
so those are the main celebrities that have had a major influence on me. I also wanted to share what my great city of New Orleans did after Starman passed. like true New Orleans fashion, we had a second line with a jazz band. here is the newspaper clipping. it's one thing I truly love about this city, we always come together through a tragedy.
before I end this blog, just wanted to let everyone know that my debut set After the Storm will hit member review in 4 days!!! holy crap!!! I'm still pinching myself that all of this is real!
enjoy what remains of your weekend! XOXOXO
