smile the nice thing about the Juan de Fuca is that it's less expensive, more accessible, and, from what i've been told, not nearly as busy. and we don't have to book in advance. when we went in 2003 it was amazing, but we only did 21 km (from Botanical Beach to Sombrio). this time, we're hoping to do the whole thing.

I love orchids. The first picture up there looks a little menacing. It has fang-looking things at the bottom. It's like some mutated carnivorous plant who will devour a full-grown adult in seconds. You should be careful. eeek

I can count on you to give me sound advice! wink So now I am reading multiple pleasure books.

At the library I checked out 3 Philip Roth books: Goodbye Columbus, The Human Stain, and The Dying Animal. Have you read any or all? Some jerk took the only copy of American Pastoral, so I have to wait until it's available. (Oh yeah, Clarke's book is STILL unavailable. Probably the same jerk will renew it til the end of the year...)

I just finished another book: Nabokov's Glory. I really liked it but of course it pales in comparison to Lolita. It must be frightfully sad when every other book of yours is compared with your genius masterpiece.

H is still on Hold.

How is your Big D coming along?

wait, so this sea gull is a wannabe flamingo?

how do you find out if the bird is a he or a she? i've never seen bird penii before.
adelina:
I googled "bird penis" and this article is the first one that popped up: Longest Bird Weiner Ever and it even comes with a picture! Joy!

This was the most interesting sentence (for me): "Most male birds don't have penises - they copulate by briefly touching genital openings, called a 'cloacal kiss.' " And I thought kissing didn't make babies!?!

If I were to ever become another animal, I'd be a bird dog. How about you?

p.s.
the above is the last question of the night. i'm noticing that i ask you too many ?'s blush

Discussing Tom Robbins' novels, somebody said:

But what are they about? what is his writing style? I'm going to go pick some of his books up I already know it I just wanted to know what to expect.

The problem is that it's very hard to say what they're "about" without sounding silly. For example, "Jitterbug Perfume" is (for the first 80 pages or so)...

I've been meaning to ask you...where did you go this weekend? You just left. Did you go off on a weekend minitrip of love and bunnies? Did you traipse about in the mountains with a secret nymph? Did you frollick and were there photos taken of your frollicks? Yeah, I'm nosy.
adelina:
why are you feeling blue?

how was the weekend? hopefully filled with solid bunnies. biggrin

The edition I read is by Robert Henricks ("translated based on the recently discovered Ma-wang-tui texts") with his introduction and commentary. I completed it the same night I started it. Actually, it's the type of book that is finished before it even starts. Exceedingly self-righteous and full of indignation at everyone except for itself. I kinda related to it. Ha! (Anyways, so I guess I already read two of the books you recommended way before the deadline I set for myself.) But then aren't politically-inclined books inherently a little bit like power-hungry megalomaniacs striving to justify the superior status it bestows upon itself?

You mentioned the motorcycle zen book. MY DAD HAS THE SAME BOOK! I always just looked upon the book, as it idly rested on the dusty bookshelves and laughed while thinking "oh, the absurdity of comparing zen and motorcycles!" WHOOPS. blush I didnt know it was an interesting read, let alone a famous/popular book. There are so many things I have yet to read, it's embarrassing.

how is a carving knife different from a regular kitchen knife? it's curved more or something?... do you know how to whittle wood into animal shapes? i'm intrigued by people who can create recognizable things from a solid chunk of mass (whether it be wood, marble or soap).
adelina:
until i retrieve a copy of histories, i'm reading L.T.'s tao te ching (because we have a copy of it here now). I'M SO CONFUSED. maybe you can provide clarity. the black/whiteness, the diametric oppositions, of this book is so irksome. it has a patronizing tone and it's a lot of proselytizing in such a small book. but i guess because of its smallness, it is actually large. because it is nothing, it is everything. and because it is stilted, it is actually simple and plain, and therefore virtuous. i dunno, it seems like a lot of phony baloney (bologna?). he places too much value on not desiring anything. but isn't his desire not to desire as much a desire as any other?

and this particular line "those who know, dont talk about it, those who talk about it, dont know" is a bit strange considering that if HE is talking about it (or writing rather) than according to his own admission, he actually doesnt know about it because if he does know then he wouldn't be talking (writing) about it.

as i silently drift through your site, i find that you desperately need photos of yourself on it. where is zork? i know you mentioned that you destroyed all pix pre-30yrs but i know there must be some recent ones you tolerate. you can't say you dont have a camera to take pix of yourself with, 'cause i know you have one! eeek
adelina:
guess what? i've decided to read this:

i'm very excited about it. i'm only about 26 pages into it, but i like it so far. plus some kinky sexual stuff too. i didnt think a vulva could engulf an entire adult male body. eeek

p.s.
thanks for those links, i wouldnt have known they were you because the only image i've had of you is with sunglasses and a hat! i do love the photo on mill hill because i can actually see more of your face. love
