But what are they about? what is his writing style? I'm going to go pick some of his books up I already know it I just wanted to know what to expect.
The problem is that it's very hard to say what they're "about" without sounding silly. For example, "Jitterbug Perfume" is (for the first 80 pages or so) largely about beets. How can you make that sound cool and trendy? I can't. But Robbins can, and does. A lot of the rest is about immortality. And the relationship between immortality and beets. See... if you put it like this, it sounds stupid. But if you read the book, you get the connection.
So... what should you expect? You should expect to be weirded out, but also to find that somehow, in some way you've never really imagined, it all makes sense.
That's kind of Tom Robbins, in a nutshell. Or at least the best nutshell I can think of. Luckily, he can think of better nutshells than I can.
