Saw the extended fam in Indiana this past week. 12 hour drive from here.
My dad's family is proof that republicans can be lots of fun. These aren't white-bread country-club repubs though, but still...repubs nonetheless.
My mom's family is proof that liberal Quakers, though exceedingly Jesusly nice, can still be kinda uptight.
Drove 2200 miles in 7 days...with a bad head cold. Yay. But at least I had Hannah with me to keep me sane and awake and whatnot. I should have taught her to drive stick a long time ago, however, and I could have saved myself a headache or two since I did all the driving. My 93 Ford Escort held up very well considering it has 175000 miles on it. No complaints. And I got 40 miles per gallon on the way there. An 11 year old FORD engine with 175000 miles on it got 40 MPG!!! Go figure.
So during my travels I ran across a 7" by a band I hadn't listened to in a while called Planes Mistaken For Stars for $2...so I picked it up, and rediscovered them.
On the surface it's sort of straight ahead punkish-hardcore, but after a couple listens, beautiful and intense melody seeps from of the washed out gravelly vocals and the guitars become a rhythmic waterfall of power, again with great subtlety and beauty. I'm in awe of their ability to sound achingly sweet and melodic while also being loud, intense, and chaotic. Sort of like being chased down and beaten by a blooming orchid with a nightstick.
Now I'm addicted...
If you can find it...check out the song called Staggerswallowswell. Should be on one of those filesharing thingies.
